Testosterone and financial risk taking

Abstract

Behavioral finance is often framed in the context of psychological factors (attitudes, thoughts, judgments, motivations, etc.) and their impact on financially-related behaviors. But, biological factors can have a significant role to play as both antecedents and consequences of these behaviors. This chapter reviews the literature on testosterone and its role in human evolution, competition, and financial risk-taking. We discuss recent research suggesting that the effects of testosterone on financial risk-taking can depend on moderating factors such as context and trait differences and highlight the importance of the experimental method in better understanding how financial risk-taking is influenced by T and situational factors
