A green mandate: The Central Bank of Nigeria and sustainable development

Abstract

The United Nations Millennium Summit of 2000 suggested eight Millennium Development Goals for countries. Environmental sustainability was one of the eight goals established during this summit. By 2015, these goals were modified to 17 Sustainable Development Goals. 4 of these goals were geared towards the climate, environment and sustainability. Thus, signifying the increasing urgency in addressing climate change issues. This is particularly important for an extraction economy like Nigeria that has struggled with environmental degradation, water and sanitation issues. These environmental issues threaten human health and life expectancy. So, working towards these goals are in Nigeria's best interest, as well as, the global climate interest. However, there are many challenges that developing countries face in ensuring environmental sustainability. Some of these challenges include policy implementation and financing. This chapter addresses the challenges of environmental sustainability, and the plans and steps taken by the Central Bank of Nigeria towards addressing these challenges.
