Communicating science beyond the ivory tower

Abstract

Writing about science is too important to be left to journalists and web site content mills. My journey into the world of writing popular-audience books began with the story of salmon declines in Europe and North America (King of Fish) and moved on to how past societies degraded their soil to their descendants impoverishment (Dirt). This led to a collaborative exploration of the parallel roles that microbial life plays in the health of plants and people (The Hidden Half of Nature) and how regenerative farming practices could bring life back to soils (Growing a Revolution). Scientists do not forfeit their opinions about what to do about the crises facing humanity in this pivotal century simply because they are know about the subject matter. Speaking out about issues of concern should not be seen as undermining scientific integrity.
