Abstract

This chapter provides a high-level overview of how the transport and land-use relationship corresponds with the trajectory of society. It revisits the Transport and Land-use Policy Cycle introduced in Chapter 1, further building on the theories, data, methods, and challenges explored in the body of this book, to consider divergent examples of responses to automobility in which the outcomes of the transport-land use interaction were products of the institutions, and these institutions the products of society’s cultures and values. From there, we consider the gaps and questions that are still relevant in addressing a more holistic approach to planning around the transport and land-use relationship. We conclude this chapter with suggestions for future work. These include moving towards a more normative basis for research questions that helps inform and support societal goals, and identifying practical examples that align with every component in the Transport and Land-use Policy Cycle introduced in this book.
