Abstract

Transition in Central and Eastern European countries started rather unexpectedly. No country was prepared to undertake the challenge of simultaneous changes in the economic, political and social arenas. The declaration of the end of the socialistic era followed a long period of trial and error. In hindsight, an analysis of the experiences of different transitional countries in the past 30 years is important to understand the transitional process in order to identify certain general patterns as well as similarities and dissimilarities of the economic development outcomes of different transition countries.
