At the start of a new leadership of the European Commission and the European Central Bank: where is the place of Central and Eastern Europe?

Abstract

Central and Eastern Europe appears to be rather absent in the new constellation of power that is meant to govern Europe for the next five years, until 2024. However, a closer look reveals that the region is strongly represented in the leadership of the new European Commission, and that the Central and Eastern European dimension is very present in the priorities of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Against this background, this paper makes five recommendations with regard to the new leadership at the EU level, both in Brussels and in Frankfurt, taking into account the particular situation of Central and Eastern Europe 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
