Abstract

Understanding the construction industry and the role it plays in the broader economy, nationally and internationally, requires construction data. However, construction is difficult to measure, and construction data users need to understand its nature and the constraints to be able to use it effectively. This chapter focuses on international construction data, how it is collected and produced, its purpose and the way it is used. Possible limitations of construction data are discussed in relation to its accuracy, consistency, reliability, and comparability. The main types of data considered in this chapter are measures of construction output, resources, company performance, construction stock, and price data - across time and across countries. In conclusion, there are some recommendations, specifically for data users, on how construction data can be approached and utilised.
