The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship

Abstract

In the past decades the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship (KSTE) was established in the literature linking endogenous growth theory to knowledge spillovers and entrepreneurship theory. This Chapter provides a systematization of the theory, which takes stock of the knowledge developed so far, surveys the rationale, the evolution and conditions of the KSTE as a field of interest within the economics of knowledge and innovation. The distinctive questions addressed by KSTE as a field are "What is the role of knowledge spillovers in entrepreneurship?", "Where do these knowledge spillovers come from?" and "What is the impact of knowledge-based entrepreneurship on society?" This chapter provides answers to these questions by adopting a perspective of the channels through which knowledge spillovers occur and increase economic growth and thus societal wealth.
