Innovation and circular economy: an analytical viewpoint

In: Elgar Encyclopedia on the Economics of Knowledge and Innovation

Abstract

Drawing on literature from the field of the Circular Economy (more simply CE) on the one hand and the Economics of Innovation on the other, we try to clarify why and how Innovation and CE intersect. The aim is to identify the contribution of innovation to the emergence and development of CE. In this conceptual paper we argue: 1) CE is itself a particular type of green innovation performed in general by a group of actors and carried out at meso level 2) When we open the black box of CE we observe many types of environmental innovations 3) We explore other relations between CE and innovation.
