Abstract

This chapter first reviews some of the wide-ranging definitions of what is increasingly termed the social and solidarity economy (SSE) and related concepts, how diverse communities self-manage their working lives in the SSE, and the varieties of contextual and theoretical perspectives on the SSE. Secondly, via the entry point method, the chapter discusses and summarizes the SSE’s most salient components, taking up both concepts and practices developed over time and across geographies, including: (1) the central place of work and working people; (2) the characteristics of its organizations; (3) the types of socio-economic activities; and (4) the values and ethical dimensions embraced. Throughout, we remain sensitive to trans-cultural and cross-linguistic practices and ways-of-knowing regards non-Western social and solidary economics. Finally, we offer concluding thoughts on the continued promises and potential of the SSE.
