Abstract

This chapter addresses the motivational side of financial crime by white-collar offenders. Motives exist in possibilities and threats for individuals and organizations. Motives found in attractive individual and corporate economic possibilities can make crime seem a convenient avenue to achieve ambitions and goals. Motives found in painful individual and corporate economic threats can make crime seem a convenient avenue to avoid collapse and bankruptcy. In addition to these motivational perspectives, a rational self-interest motivation is independent of the beneficiary of financial crime. The relative convenience of crime determines how needs are met by potential offenders.
