Vision correction

Abstract

The fourth new dementia intervention is vision correction (VC) in the form of corrective lenses (CL). Vision impairment is also a product of aging and can be mitigated by CLs. The outcome variable for the VC evaluation is related to the number of deaths that are averted by the intervention, in the form of the life years (LYs) that are saved. Older adults with poor vision are more likely to have falls, and be involved with driving accidents that are fatal. To monetarize this outcome, we again use the value of a LY obtained from the VSL literature. The estimation strategy for establishing causality for VC is the same as that for HAs. We also find that VC was very worthwhile. For each dollar of costs for CLs, there are in total 18.63 dollars of benefits, which now includes 2.4 benefits per dollar of costs just from the dementia benefits.
