Exploiting social media to better understand travel behaviour and mobility

Abstract

Unlike conventional methods of data collection, social media data typically provide information at the global level. Twitter data, as the social media data of interest of this study, will be utilised to analyse people's mobility patterns using displacement and radius of gyration as two mobility surrogates. Further, a holistic review of studies on Twitter data for analysing mobility will be conducted. A more focused analysis will be then conducted on pre, during, and post COVID-19 mobility of a few major cities around the world. The impact of geographic, and economic variables will be also investigated. This study is expected to inform us about the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictions on mobility patterns on a global scale. One major outcome of this study is to re-examine the capacity of Twitter data for analysing the dynamics of human mobility patterns, by looking at the time-series aspect of the data.
