Introduction to the Handbook of Travel Behaviour

Abstract

This chapter situates the contribution of the Handbook in relation to the broader field of transportation research and sets out its structure. Defined as the motivational, cognitive, situational, and dispositional factors that determine human behaviour, the study of travel behaviour has grown and evolved substantially over the past 50 years. Areas of innovation in Travel Behaviour research are in relation to understanding resource and energy use in the context of mounting environmental problems; greater recognition of heterogeneity in choices; the impacts of digital technologies on data collection, theory building and the reshaping of motivations, temporal and spatial aspects of travel behaviour and disruptions (e.g. the Covid-19 pandemic), and contextual differences. The Chapter reviews the contributions of individual chapters structured into four complementary parts: (1) ‘Origins and Foundations’; (2) ‘Data and Analysis in Travel Behaviour Research’; (3) ‘Built Environment, Travel Modes and Behaviour’ and; (4) ‘Social factors, disruptions and contexts’.
