Changing research publication practices and the rise of research metrics

Abstract

This chapter discusses the nature of scientometrics/bibliometrics as a relatively young academic discipline, with a high degree of application in research policy and evaluation. While research metrics are seen by many in the science system as a way to objectify the quality of research, research metrics also create an imaginary order, in which the representing scores or rankings thus create absolute values. The chapter discusses various meta-level bibliometric perspectives, against a background in which three particular quantitative indicators or methods play an important role: Journal Impact Factor; h-index; and university rankings.
