Abstract

This chapter highlights challenges facing urban food systems, focusing on the need for a significant shift so that the growing urban population can sustainably and affordably access nourishing food. Food may be readily available in cities, but access is frequently profoundly unequal. Ensuring equitable urban food and nutrition security while sustaining the planet are pressing matters for policy and programmes. The chapter discusses several innovative initiatives to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 11 on making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. These embrace a holistic approach that considers all the ecosystem’s elements and engages all the stakeholders.
