Abstract

This chapter reviews a selection of the ways in which research into experiences of pain and suffering are set to draw us to interrogate the moral substance and meaning of social life. It largely focuses on the analytical and critical concerns that are attached to the concept of ‘social suffering’ and how these operate in the context of health research. It is also designed to involve readers in questioning the role and value played by humanitarian commitments in projects of social science. Humanitarian culture and actions are featured with reference to their potential to effect social awakenings and advance social understanding. As the chapter develops, it further invites reflection on the importance of caregiving as a means to reveal how social life matters for people and on how care in practice is the means to create humane forms of society.
