Reservations against fuzzy sets in QCA

Abstract

QCA’s truth table follows a threshold logic that connects to crisp sets but not to fuzzy sets and their logic of truth-in-degree. In fuzzy sets, cases that confirm the logical proposition, if X, then Y, may still reduce consistency, while cases that contradict this logical proposition may still contribute to consistency. In fact, calibrated fuzzy sets are an oxymoron because fuzzy suggests vagueness, while to calibrate means to be precise. Therefore, fuzzy sets are not a good match with QCA. Instead, this chapter suggests using linguistic hedges to calibrate degrees of membership but not to assign them set membership values. This recognizes the colourfulness of social reality but does not commit to fuzzy set parameters of fit and relies on crisp set ones instead.
