Abstract

The truth table is QCA’s analytical heart. It is a tool with which to dialogue case-level and cross-case knowledge into causal claims. When not all cases in a row have the same outcome (case-level knowledge), researchers dialogue knowledge of cases, context and concepts to interpret the row as true or false (cross-case knowledge). After the Boolean minimization, researchers again dialogue knowledge of cases, context and concepts to interpret the solution into a plausible causal explanation. The chapter explains all aspects of the truth table analysis - from setting consistency and frequency thresholds to dealing with limited diversity, making directional assumptions on explanatory conditions, dealing with easy and difficult counterfactuals, and interpreting the solution into a plausible causal explanation.
