Abstract

In this chapter will first provide a brief introduction into platform business models, and list the characteristics that often define platform business models, and distinguish them from other types of organizational structures. This chapter will then examine the role of AI in these platform ecosystems, both highlighting how AI might be used to increase the value created by these platforms, but also to the challenges that arise as AI becomes central to the governance of these AI ecosystems. Finally, the chapter identifies theoretical and methodological considerations for conducting research in such a messy complex context.
