Innovation as outcome

Abstract

The next series of studies extended the argument to the national level. As a case study, at the US National Science Foundation (NSF), an organization created in 1950 to fund basic research, thoughts on technological innovation emerged out of a discourse on research, and as a legitimization of research expenditures. The NSF was interested in technological innovation and the extent to which it could be considered an output, arising from basic research. Over the years, the NSF commissioned many studies to determine to what extent this is true, and what links exist between science and economic growth.
