Abstract

The study of social complexity has always been deeply intertwined with technological developments, going back to, for example, computational simulations of flock behaviour. The role of technology is likely to become even bigger in the Digital Anthropocene. But there is more to this than just the use of (digital) technology in research. Social life is profoundly impacted by technology. This chapter therefore does two things. First, it maps how digital technology has gained agency in social life to create complex interaction patterns between humans and technology. The (generative) nature of algorithms receives particular attention. Second, it reflects on the role of technology in the complexity sciences. Doubtless, technology has a disruptive impact on social life. We therefore also turn our attention toward societal transitions as driven by technology, and to the management and operation of (technological) systems. This chapter builds on Chapter 11, Human-Machine: Posthuman Cognitive Assemblages.
