Abstract

This chapter introduces the new field of configurational social science, which sits at the heart of our argument throughout this tour, from its approach to complexity and methods to its embrace of the social science turn. We explore the two major schools of thought which configurational social science is comprised: intersectionality and case-based configurational thinking. This includes examining their unique approaches to complex causality, including the various camps within and across these two fields; a review of scholars working to bridge these ideas with the complexity sciences and the study of social complexity; assembling the theoretical framing upon which this bridge is being built; grounding all of the above in a much-needed critical complexity that addresses issues of social justice and inequalities. The chapter concludes with a review of two scholars widely recognized for doing the work we see as most promising, namely Sylvia Walby and David Byrne.
