The role of social innovation research in sustainable development

Abstract

This chapter summarises the evolution of the concept of sustainable development (SD) and examines the current state of the art of social innovation (SI) support to SD across existing research streams: sustainable economic development, SI for a sustainable environment, the role of not-for-profit actors in sustainable social development, and the importance of tackling both agency and structure in SD issues. Drawing upon recent desk and case study research, the chapter outlines the future research landscape and proposes three critical future research areas: the climate and environmental crisis, poverty and inequality challenges, and the need for good governance. Overall, the chapter argues that the concepts, methods and tools of SI are almost uniquely well suited to successfully support both the existing and the climate focused, post-COVID SD landscape. SI research should concentrate on ensuring its characteristics are designed, tailored and deployed to optimise the achievement of as many SD goals as possible.
