Interdisciplinarity, globality and downsizing: aspirations for the future of terrorism studies

Abstract

This chapter explains why making future predictions for the field of terrorism studies is difficult but that we can explore aspirations for the field. The chapter outlines three potentially key themes for terrorism research in the coming years. First, is the need for interdisciplinarity in research. This is not for fields to borrow frameworks from other disciplines but rather to engage in long-term collaborations reaching across fields. Second is the aspiration for research to truly become global. This is particularly important as many terrorist attacks do not occur in the global north, though theory is driven by researchers living in it. Finally, an argument is made that terrorism studies takes a less central role to the study of insurgency.
