Terrorism databases: problems and solutions

Abstract

This chapter examines the important role of databases in terrorism research. The proliferation of empirical research in terrorism studies has certainly been facilitated by the advent of a wide variety of databases. While these databases are of huge benefit to the advancement of this area of research they are not without their challenges. This chapter assesses the problems and solutions with a sample of databases. Within this, the chapter outlines what the metrics of a ‘good database’ are, highlighting factors around scope, transparency, error handling, consistency and availability. Following on from this, the chapter provides a good practice guide to utilising terrorism data.
