The role of neighbourhoods in quality of life: toward a comprehensive model

Abstract

A model to investigate the role of physical and experienced features of neighbourhoods on impacting people’s quality of life (QOL) is proposed. An initial model includes four physical elements of the neighbourhood (appearance, busyness, affluence and amenity distances), and seven experiential elements of the neighbourhood (satisfaction, place attachment, experienced social support, satisfaction with amenities, involvement, physical activity and housing satisfaction). Multiple indicators of each element are developed and tested in a community sample survey. In the main study, the indicators were examined in three diverse neighbourhoods of a different city. That model includes three physical elements (physical condition, busyness and actual amenity distances) and four experiential elements (supportive involvement, attachment, physical activity and satisfaction with distances to amenities). This seven-element model accounted for 40 per cent of the variance in residents’ overall reported QOL, suggesting that neighbourhoods have perhaps been underrated as determinants of overall QOL.
