Integrating gender, peace and environment: The gender dimension of environmental peacebuilding

Abstract

This chapter examines environmental peacebuilding from a gender perspective. Environmental peacebuilding initiatives frequently fail to adopt an integrative approach, overlooking the connections between gender, environment, and peacebuilding. This represents a missed opportunity. Women are widely recognised as an essential component of sustainable peacebuilding, yet they remain largely excluded from peacebuilding processes. This is particularly unfortunate in the context of environmental peacebuilding given the gendered nature of environmental knowledge and natural resource management. This chapter explores what an integrated approach to environmental peacebuilding might look like, and how international law can assist. In addition to ensuring equal participation, an integrated approach requires recognising the expertise and knowledge of women with respect to natural resource management and environmental protection. The challenges preventing the ready adoption of an integrated approach to environmental peacebuilding are also considered.
