Abstract

The sustainability concept is particularly important for the future of our planet and humanity, and yet often it is misunderstood, misused or even abused. The chapter begins with a discussion of the concept and its history and then provides various definitions of and approach to sustainable development along with its three major dimensions: economic, environmental and social dimensions. The concept has also been heavily criticized from different perspectives. This chapter reviews the major shortcomings of sustainability and various criticisms and discuses viable alternative approaches.
