PEPs and the role of FIUs and regulators

Abstract

Using information from the African FATF-style regional bodies and a range of country mutual evaluation reports (MERs), this chapter critically examines the role and effectiveness in practice of financial intelligence units (FIUs) in African countries in analysing suspicious transaction reports (STRs) and disseminating financial information relating to potential money laundering by PEPs. Weaknesses in the current position are highlighted and strategies for maintaining and strengthening the work of FIUs are explored. The role and effectiveness of financial regulators and supervisors in overseeing the AML obligations of financial institutions and other bodies vulnerable to money laundering is also critically analysed.
