The circular economy

Abstract

This chapter explores the model for the circular economy (CE) representing a policy strategy promoted by various social actors. The discussion includes identifying the ideals upon which CE is grounded and describing how CE is about global policymaking and more concretely illustrating how policy through the EU for this aspect is integrated for innovation policy. The applied social science approach for the line of reasoning invites a broadening of the definition of what is included in ‘the economy’ for CE, pertaining to how this involves relations across different societal sectors. This means targeting questions about collective actions for the development of CE. Through this discussion it is stressed that high-level circularity principles, i.e. those leading to smarter products and use and extended lifespan, require the implementation of socio-institutional changes, with references to cultural factors, market relations and regulatory structures.
