Construction and the green economy

Abstract

As the most important single contributor to overall greenhouse gas emissions globally, the building sector is a key target for green economy approaches and climate change mitigation. The chapter presents the current dynamics in this industry by distinguishing efficiency and technology-oriented approaches from alternative strategies building on sufficiency and low-tech schemes. It illustrates changing practices in this sector and scrutinizes local institutional contexts and their relevance for greening trajectories. Besides technical and economic aspects of sustainable construction, this contribution also pleads for more attention to be paid to the social dimension of green building endeavours. The chapter ends by outlining pertinent research avenues for the near future.
