Social networks in space

Abstract

A spatial social network (SSN) is a set of geolocated nodes and edges between the nodes, where the edges represent some type of social flow or connection. SSNs range in size from small anthropological studies describing a few dozen personal relationships in remote, isolated parts of the world, to massive studies of online social media data representing inter-continental ties. This entry is written to describe the premise of SSN research, best practices for collecting, visualizing and analyzing data. It ends with an open set of questions on SSNs.
