Spatial optimization

Abstract

This chapter reviews spatial optimization. The historical context for optimization is given, noting foundations for a spatial orientation in mathematics, location theory, regional science, land use planning and natural resource management. The significance of spatial optimization along with a formal definition is provided. The chapter establishes context for use and application based on descriptive and prescriptive intentions. Along with formal specification, important defining characteristics of spatial optimization are described in detail, including decision variables, coefficients, objectives and constraints, focusing on geographic orientation. Solution approaches are reviewed and attempts are made to characterize challenges in solving spatial optimization problem instances.
