When is financial education successful? Taking stock of the new wave of field evidence

Abstract

Despite the widespread popularity of financial education programs in public policy circles, the academic community remains highly skeptical owing largely to early studies that showed muted causal impacts. This review paper assesses a new wave of field experiments that show that financial education can be effective, which helps bridge the divide between policy and research interests. The paper also highlights specific features, target groups, timing choices, and complementary interventions that can make financial education programs successful, and outlines key outstanding questions in this research agenda.
