Sports mega-events

Abstract

This chapter discusses research on sports mega-events (SMEs) that has been conducted over the past 30 years. The chapter contains reflections on the author’s motivations for researching SMEs, his theoretical approach, the current state of knowledge and key issues in SME research. The main issues identified include: defining sports mega-events; the mediation of sports mega-events; their role in urban development processes; the politics of SMEs, especially concerning labour, human rights and the environment; legacies and impacts; and resistance to sports mega-events by local communities and increasingly transnational campaign groups. The chapter concludes by summarising the research undertaken to date, outlines future research questions about SMEs and calls for further academic scrutiny of SMEs.
