Ecological economics in China: from origins, to inertia, to rejuvenation

Abstract

Although China was the first country in the world to come up with the idea of developing ecological economics as a discipline in the early 1980s, discussion and development of the ecological economics paradigm in China has been quiet for a long time. After nearly 40 years since its initial development, ecological economics in China is now embracing its best opportunity for rejuvenation, as the nation is starting on the path to transformation from an Industrial Civilization to an Ecological Civilization. This chapter first reviews the development history of ecological economics in China and describes the main reasons for its fall into inertia. Then, the ecological nature of China’s profound traditional philosophy and the declared national goal of transformation to an Ecological Civilization are presented to demonstrate the unique opportunities for the rejuvenation of ecological economics in China. Finally, the rejuvenation agenda of ecological economics in China is presented with the "Two-Way Tactics".
