Abstract

In general, we find two member categories of the global industry associations: individual corporations and/or national associations. This chapter documents and analyzes the various applications of membership, and examines how principles have evolved. It further discusses the considerations behind the adoption of these principles, and their consequences for the internal and external life of the associations. The definition of membership affects the funding of associations as different member categories usually contribute different resources, a delicate issue that may stir conflicts. The definition of membership, however, also gives members disproportionate access to participate in associational life and to define the strategies of associations. Balancing economic, social and political concerns is essential to the stability of associations.
