Abstract

A number ofinnovative technologies have emerged in the recent past that promise to radically change not only how much, but how, electricity may beutilisedat customers' premises. Moreover, customers now have new options to generate some of the electricity they consume on-site - and as the cost of storage declines - they will have additional options such as storingthe excess generation. Technological innovations on the demand side are consequential as consumers find opportunities to trade with their peers. Similarly, advances in remote sensing and artificial intelligence allow the aggregation of portfolios of load, distributedgenerationand storage - which can be remotely monitored, managed andoptimised. These advances allow transactions among customers on platforms creating value fornew and innovative services. For those who do not have access to commercialelectricity,stand-alone distributed generation andstorage offer solutions.
