Abstract

Chapter 5 outlines the China-Indian Ocean-Mediterranean Sea blue economic passage, which focuses upon seaports operated by China’s state-owned companies China Merchants Port Holdings Co. Ltd and COSCO Shipping Ports Ltd. Attention is focused on four of their ports: Sri Lanka’s Hambantota and Colombo, Djibouti and its African hinterland connections, and Piraeus as China’s hub for penetrating Europe. Mixed reactions to these port developments have occurred from Europe and the United States but the strongest response has been from India in the Bay of Bengal economic circle and the Indian Ocean that has encompassed both Japan and Indonesia.
