Economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for the developing world

Abstract

This chapter begins by discussing the public health and economic challenges posed by the pandemic and the relations between the two. It traces the global spread of the pandemic and the policy challenges that this threw up. The impact on global and regional output, employment and inflation are considered. In particular, the drop in output and its unpredictability are emphasized. Monetary and fiscal responses to the pandemic are discussed as is the role of international aid to developing countries.
