Abstract

This chapter considers the possibility of regulatory options to minimize the generation of FLW. It considers the categories of regulation, including self-regulation. The chapter then looks at a number of examples of direct regulation through legislation. This commences with EU legislation which evolved from the EU’s general waste regime beginning with the direct regulation regimes which have been adopted by EU Member States: Republic of Ireland, Italy, France and Germany. It then considers the direct regulation regimes of the US and Japan. The chapter finally details the voluntary regulation regime of the UK, which has consciously rejected direct legislation in favour of supporting the voluntary self-regulation of industry.
