Abstract

If there is anyone who can describe in detail the continuities, but also the breaks in the life and work of Karl Polanyi, it is his daughter, the political economist Kari Polanyi-Levitt. The interview that was conducted in November 2017 in Vienna focuses on the central question that forms the leitmotif of his lifelong search process, the problem of freedom in a complex society. Kari Polanyi-Levitt reveals the Central European roots of his thinking. She traces the different questions he had to face in Red Vienna after his emigration. And she discusses Polanyi’s work in England and America, his concern about the future of civilization and the dangers that the machine age poses for personal freedom. The interview ends with a brief look at his final project, the magazine Co-Existence.
