Polanyi, nature and the international: the missing dimension of imperial ecocide

Abstract

In this chapter the authors focus on Polanyi’s rich conceptual thinking about nature and the international in The Great Transformation (1944) to help us understand contemporary dimensions of ecological crises and the link between imperialism, ecology and historical capitalism. Building on Polanyi’s conceptions of nature, they argue that capitalism’s deleterious relation to nature has been there from the beginning - since its emergence in the European centre and in its relations with peripheries. In other words, capitalism is grounded in particular forms of imperial ecocide that lie at the centre of its functioning. Extending Polanyi’s analysis in this way allows us to examine contemporary capitalism’s domination of nature and ecological crises and the challenges for contemporary resistance.
