Progressive values and institutional realities at The New School for Social Research

Abstract

This chapter presents The New School, its founders and the progressive values to which they referred. The question is posed as to how these values were interpreted and transformed into action at the time of the foundation and during the decades which followed. How are the original values integrated into institutional discourse at present? How has The New School promoted equality or social improvement over time? We hope by this study to contribute to a more general reflection on Progressive values, on the ambiguities in Progressive thought and on the present-day legacy of the Progressive movement.
