Paratransit as a feeder to mass transit in Manila, Philippines

Abstract

Descriptions and analyses in this chapter attempt to define the role of paratransit in a developing country context, with emphasis on its feeder service role and thus a way of developing mass transit system in coordination with a transit oriented development (TOD) approach as a solution to urban transportation problems and more sustainable urban development. TOD, with its concept of compact, mixed-use and pedestrian-friendliness organized around a transit station, necessitates understanding the accessibility to it. Using structural equation modelling (SEM), this chapter also evaluates different factors that lead to preference of specific types of paratransit modes as feeders to mass transit. Satisfaction of commuters has a positive influence on mass transit connectivity attitudes and the future use of both paratransit and mass transit. Improvement policies regarding paratransit services must be carefully drawn with the purpose of enhancing the performance of mass transit as a way to realize the concept of TOD.
