Abstract

In contrast to the product perspective, where the final frugal product or service is the subject of examination, viewing frugal innovation from a process perspective is still in its infancy. This chapter explores how to arrive at a frugal innovation by studying the new product development (NPD) process along its single phases. Particular attention is given to seven specific dimensions, which significantly shape the process. The empirical part of the chapter is based on a single-case study, studying the NPD of the frugal device “iBreastExam” for the cost-effective, mobile and radiation-free breast-cancer examination. Results suggest that organizational capabilities that are able to tap the context, design and technology dimensions are decisive for the successful process outcome. Against the background of the limitations in such a single-case examination, future research topics in this and neighbouring areas such as innovation management (fuzzy-front-end), design, supply chain management and entrepreneurship (effectuation theory) are outlined.
