Transnational diaspora entrepreneurship (TDE): the case of Puerto Rico

Abstract

Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship (TDE) is an important phenomenon worldwide. In the case of Puerto Rico, the migrant population plays a major role in the entrepreneurial sector. Immigrant and returned migrants compose 26.7% of the total early entrepreneurial activity (TEA) in the period under study (2016-2018). Our results suggest that transnational entrepreneurs, defined as those that have business contacts in their former place of residence, benefit from these contacts: 74.1% of returned migrant entrepreneurs and 79.2% of transnational immigrant entrepreneurs engage or plan to engage in export activities, while less than 58% of the rest of the entrepreneurs do so. Moreover, regression analysis finds that the orientation towards export activities is a factor that increases the likelihood of being an entrepreneur among returned migrants. Other factors, such as age, income or educational attainment, also influence the likelihood of being an entrepreneur among migrants.
