Abstract

This chapter explores the innovation efforts surrounding smart grids, an imprecisely defined concept which refers to the incorporation of ICT systems into existing networks and the capabilities and services which these could unlock. It also examines the tensions between the opposing views of smart grids between a series of incremental innovations and a paradigm-shifting systemic change. The chapter outlines the basic principles behind smart grids and provides historical background and context to its most important component technologies. Two prominent national innovation systems are examined in this chapter, the United Kingdom and South Korea, to explore the innovation system surrounding the development and demonstration of smart grids, which, as a systemic innovation requiring intervention and cooperation between the public and private sectors, has several unique features.
