Abstract

This chapter concludes our survey of the fragmented research field of sustainable innovation. Drawing together the detailed surveys of research lineages on sustainable innovation of preceding handbook chapters, we assess how knowledge production on sustainability directed technological change is advancing, and how such knowledge contributes to addressing negative impacts of technological change. Based on a discussion of research achievements and gaps remaining, we propose that (1) future research can gain much by exploiting new combinations of now separate research lineages, and (2) focus empirical research on interacting systems of provision in urban and regional contexts.
